Irish: Sponc English: Coltsfoot Latin: Tussilago Farfaro
Sponc
or Coltsfoot, grows on the roadsides in Lusmagh and also in tillage and
waste places. A perennial, it flowers in deep winter (An dhúluachair)
i.e. from Christmas Day until St. Bridget’s day (1st February). The
flower is pink and white and grows on a stem about 150 mm long...
Sponc Sponc is a reference to its strength pungent smell and its curative qualities. The name Coltsfoot is derived from the shape of its leaf.
Tussis, meaning cough, is testimony that the Romans also used Sponc as a cure for their coughing. |
